    Angine de Poitrine

    rock

    Disciples of planet Earth’s rock deities, space-time voyagers Klek and Khn de Poitrine gaze in wonder at hot dogs, pyramids, and rock music in all its glorious excess. Asymmetrical and dissonant, Angine de Poitrine’s music makes hearts race and bodies move with ecstatic abandon. Through tight, pulsing drum grooves and intricate tangles of double-neck microtonal guitar, the band summons swirling vortices of hypnotic sound and vision. Since the release of Vol. 1 in 2024, Angine de Poitrine are in the eye of an ever-growing storm of enthusiasm from audiences, critics, and music industry’s main actors. After delivering electrifying performances at Quebec’s major festivals, including the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Angine de Poitrine sets their sights on the prestigious Trans Musicales in Rennes. All these facts are strictly reserved to the humanoids: Angine de Poitrine are simply thrilled to play rock ’n’ roll.

    toe

    @toe

    post rock

    Since forming in 2000, toe have synthesized everything from pop, post- and math-rock, jazz, R&B, and electronic into one of the most distinct sounds in rock music. Their debut LP the book about my idle plot on a vague anxiety (2005) left an unmistakable imprint across the splintered worlds of instrumental and experimental music, exploding the tenets of post-rock with writing and performances that channel the intensity of hardcore. toe have kept the same lineup since their inception. Yamazaki Hirokazu’s acoustic and Mino Takaaki’s electric guitars often juxtapose one another against the backdrop of drummer Kashikura Takashi’s unmatched sense of feel and rhythm, specializing in phrases that trick the listener with unanticipated backbeats and climactic gasps. Bassist Yamane Satoshi lends depth to the staccato, explorative melodies, gluing them to, and making sense of Takashi’s unique style. The debut’s follow-up, For Long Tomorrow (2009), was a breakthrough that explored their pop and jazz DNA, as well cementing comparisons to post-rock forebears and contemporaries like Tortoise. For Long Tomorrow also produced one of toe’s better known songs in “グッドバイ / Goodbye,” a re-recording of the 2006 track from the New Sentimentality EP, this time featuring Japanese pop singer Asako Toki. 2015’s Hear You was defined by its loosening of the rhythmically frenzied work that predated it. Understated instrumentation stretched and smeared style and genre spectra, as heard in the piano-laden “オトトタイミングキミト”; the drumless rap on “Time Goes”; and the tabla, synth, and chanting in “G.O.O.D L.U.C.K.” Although such experimentation was always foreshadowed by the band’s early EPs songs, ideas we forgot (2003) and The Future Is Now (2012)—and later echoed by Our Latest Number (2018)—Hear You is still subdued, a marked departure from the band’s prior work. NOW I SEE THE LIGHT (2024), toe’s fourth full-length album, is a bridge between the experimental restraint of their later work and the explosive abandon of their earlier output. From the opening tracks, toe balance serpentine passages against meditative repetition. On “LONELINESS WILL SHINE,” “サニーボーイ・ラプソディ,” and “NOW I SEE THE LIGHT,” Hirokazu reprises his role as part-time vocalist, breaking the band yet further from the instrumental work that formerly defined them. As a whole, NOW I SEE THE LIGHT closes the loop between early and late toe, giving them a clean slate for their new outlook.

    ELLEGARDEN

    @ellegarden

    punk rock

    Japanese pop/punk quartet Ellegarden have become one of the biggest rock bands in their homeland, selling out 30,000 seat venues as a headliner and appearing at most of the nation's major rock festivals before bringing their explosive sound to American audiences. Ellegarden was formed in late 1998 when Takeshi Hosomi, who was working in the computer industry as an engineer, was approached by his friend Shinichi Ubukata, who played guitar and was looking for a singer to help him with his music. Hosomi had already been writing songs in his spare time, and with a strong background in English (he lived and worked in California for a while), he found himself writing his lyrics primarily in that language. Teaming with bassist Yuichi Takada and drummer Hirotaka Takahashi, Ellegarden generated a tight, punchy but muscular sound reminiscent of North American bands such as , and , while also displaying the influence of Hosomi's favorites, . In the fall of 2001, Ellegarden signed with the Japanese Dynamord label, and released their first EP, Bare Foot, with a full-length album, Don't Trust Anyone But Us, following in the spring of 2002. The album was a hit, and Ellegarden followed with a new LP every year; 2006's Eleven Fire Crackers also became their first North American release when it was issued by Nettwerk in the summer of 2007. Accustomed to playing major shows in Japan, where they've shared stages with and , Ellegarden made their American live debut in 2006 with a seven-city tour which included a stop at the South by Southwest Music Conference, where they played a well-received showcase set, with the enthusiastic audience demanding an encore that stretched their performance from five to eight songs.

    일본 펑크/사이코빌리 록 유닛 The Birthday는 보컬리스트 치바 유스케와 J-록 밴드의 기타리스트 아키노부 이마이의 프로젝트이다. 두 사람 모두 2006년에 떠났고 Midnight Bankrobbers라는 이름으로 듀오로 짧은 근무를 한 후 Birthday를 만들었습니다. 새로운 밴드는 유스케가 Thee Machine Gun Elephant에서 연주했던 드러머 Kazuyuki Kuhara와 베이시스트 Haruki Hirai에서 리듬 섹션을 찾았고, 2006년 여름 싱글 "Stupid"로 데뷔하면서 시간을 거의 낭비하지 않았다. 첫 번째 스튜디오 앨범인 Rollers Romantics도 2006년에 발매되었다. 그들의 두 번째 앨범인 Teardrop (2007)을 발매할 때, The Birthday는 이미 DVD Looking for the Lost Teardrops Tour Final에 기록된 쇼와 함께 미국 최고의 장소인 Budokan을 연주할 만큼 충분히 컸다. 밴드는 같은 해 초에 발매된 Motel Radio Sixty Six EP에 이어 2008년에 세 번째 앨범 Night on Fool을 발매하면서 연간 일정을 지켰다.
